Re: Chrysler Sirens

The Chrysler in Glendale, CA at the Cerro Negro lookout station is still there, AFAIK. It's in deteriorated condition, but definitely not rusted out (YET). There is also part of one on the roof of the old Firestone Tire & Rubber Co building in Southgate, CA. Engine stolen years ago, but the chas...

Re: The Beverly Hills, CA Thunderbolts; Anyone have pictures

Do you mind posting the 1986 photos? It may be possible to cross-reference and find where they are (or were). Sorry for any confusion; the photos are from the 1950s. It was '86 when LA County abandoned the siren program (presumably disabling Beverly Hills' system as well). I can't find the photos I...

Re: Los Angeles CD siren system

Im referring to the sunflowers, 500T's The only 500 I personally know of, which was still operational and tested regularly is in a little town east of Reno, NV, and that one is a 550 ( "sunflower" with dual heads). I'm reasonably sure there are others as well, because they're not as old a...

The Beverly Hills, CA Thunderbolts; Anyone have pictures?

Just wondering if there are any known COLOR photos showing the Beverly Hills Thunderbolts. I have found a few (courtesy of Wirechief, Polar Inertia, and others), but they're black & white, and I have never found any information about testing, or if they were taken offline in January of '86 with ...

Re: Los Angeles CD siren system

A few weeks ago I was watching "Emergency!", and there was a scene where Squad 51 and the Mayfair ambulance were enroute to Rampart Hospital and in the background I saw an SD-10, complete with the work platform up near the siren. Pretty cool stuff to see on an old tv show! And that was in...

Re: Los Angeles CD siren system

Well, it takes a lot of energy, time, and money to upkeep a system as big as LA's system. Also, I'm not sure how many times LA is faced with flood/tsunami threats, but if its not often (as in 10+ years) then there is no need. If I remember correctly, LA has over 40 500Ts, and the system is dominant...

Re: Los Angeles CD siren system

Where do they go? The scrapyard? Two of them are at the Ft. MacArthur museum in San Pedro, and at least a few of them are in private collections. I believe our member BigMikeSoCal has one of the 500Ts. As for the others removed, I'd assume that the contractor who did the removal could do as they pl...

Re: Los Angeles CD siren system

There are several threads on the old LA system, but I don't think it's been brought up lately. The last word I heard, of any official mention of the sirens at all by a government agency, was about 5 or 8 years ago. The County of LA was considering a reverse-911 system, and within the debate, it was ...

Re: Pic Of The Dallas Fire Station 42 Thunderbolt With Light

I don't think we know what happened to any of the ones being removed. The first one to disappear that I remember, was FS #10 (Frankford just west of the N Tollway). I took the Station 10 siren up to Oak Ridge east of Gainsville. I thought I had mentioned that about 20 times on here before. Here it ...

I don't think we know what happened to any of the ones being removed. The first one to disappear that I remember, was FS #10 (Frankford just west of the N Tollway). I'm beginning to think they're going to handle it like Los Angeles County has, in that they only remove them when they're in the way, o...
