Re: Roster of Sirens in New York City (& Nearby Areas)

At one time there were exactly 741 H.O.R. sirens in the city. That's the peak in all five boroughs. 34 of them were 40-HP Super Sirex models. Some on tall buildings, some 'hidden' among the skyscrapers and tall buildings in Manhattan, and some only 3-4 stories tall on school buildings. The rest were...

Believe it or not, I have seen ads for HOR sirens, in old magazines, where the company added the words Hear Our Roar . It could very well be HEAR OUR ROAR. It may have nothing to do with the German company. For a GREAT photo and description of the HOR Super-Sirex, search eBay now under HOR + Siren. ...

They had 3-phase, 40-hp motors! About 125 dB.

That one would not carry as far as most, however, as it is mounted so low.

Great pics. Fantastic job.

You don't want to hear that siren. It's menacing, mean ugly. About the purest classic mechancial siren tone ever made, and VERY loud.

It does look like the housing will dampen the sound so that it will only flow downward to those poor, frightened school children.

How did they rotate?

Did it have an additional motor for rotation, or did the centrifugal force rotate it by itself?

Does it have two siren motors, one for each side, or only one in the center that rotates both shafts?

Is that the same as a Hormann siren?

Thank you,

Larry

Identify This Siren

Here's another interesting siren from the Historical US Archive: http://www.airraidsirens.com/images/corbis3.jpg This bohemoth terrorized New York city between 1950 and around 1978 when they were removed. There were very few of them, perhaps 25. The rest of the 741 sirens NYC operated were all much ...
