Re: Ft Stewart, GA tornado w/strange siren.

Actually, I bet that Federal would be very interested in getting a ROM dump of the controllers for those sirens. Because if they can prove that ATI literally downloaded the 2001 Alert sample tone from their website and looped it, rather than, say, going out and recording a 2001 in the wild themselve...

Re: Battle Creek ATI HPSS16-R Alert Test + Pictures

Galesburg would have been to the NORTHwest, out by Fort Custer. If the siren running whoop was off to the southwest, that's more out towards Climax than anything else, but I'd think that would be too far away to hear. Used to live right about 4700 feet from that siren (G-maps puts the total distance...

Said it before, and I'll say it again. Nothing in the world screams "YOU'RE ALL GONNA DIE!" like a dual-tone Thunderbolt in good condition...

Re: Battle Creek, MI ATI HPSS-16R?

Thanks for the info! The only golf course siren I could think of is the nearest 612. I think for their test next month (April) I'm going to record one of the ATIs just for the heck of it. I'd think, based on the guy saying he would "split the difference" between the Golf Course and M&...

Re: Battle Creek, MI ATI HPSS-16R?

Sadly, I moved out of Battle Creek over a decade ago, before I really got into the siren hobby, so I can't say that I know from personal experience where any others are. However... A while back, someone posted a video of a test of the downtown 1000T, complete with the ham radio traffic reporting the...

Re: Battle Creek, MI ATI HPSS-16R?

For the record, the 612 at Riverside Elementary had a close call back in 2011, when an EF1 tornado came through about a quarter mile south of it. Always had a soft spot for the 612 because I was attending Riverside (third or fourth grade) when it was installed. We'd seen it get installed a few days ...

Re: Lion King's "Defender" Up Close Video Found

I'm not going to dig up my physics textbook and work out the actual numbers (particularly since we don't know the *actual* output of the Defender), but running ballpark numbers based on my admittedly rusty memory, 133dB at 100 feet should equate to roughly 130dB at 115 feet, so the claimed output of...

Re: Lion King's "Defender" Up Close Video Found

Given the size of the siren and certain things about the video (how people reacted, how the *camera* reacted), I'd actually not be surprised if it genuinely was in the 135dB-plus range. Whether it hits the advertised 138dB, I don't know, but it's certainly up into the rarefied territory of the P-50 ...

Re: Let's clarify some things. (This is about sirens)

Yeah, in general, sirens are set to automatically shut off after 3-5 minutes through their controllers, to prevent overheating damage to drivers (for electronic sirens) or motors (for electromechanical sirens). Back in the Civil Defense era, most government buildings (including libraries) had poster...

Re: Belding, MI Thunderbolt 1003 4/4/15

If the system is the old CD-era one, then there's a good chance that it's either landline or local control. I know that Galesburg is pressuring Kalamazoo County and Calhoun County to finally get a centralized control system, since their sirens, last I knew, were still all locally controlled, with so...
