No, it's definitely a square-horned Sentry, painted white, and it's on top of the town's water tower. That's it on Google Maps. I've been meaning to photograph it but I've never had my camera with me when I've had occasion to drive through town.

Auburn, IN Thunderbolt 1003 - Amazing Installation

I was on my way to Auburn, IN (in the northeast corner of the state, north of Fort Wayne) last fall to visit a friend and fellow audio enthusiast. I missed the turn into his long driveway and ended up driving into Auburn before I could find a good place to turn around, and I happened upon this, stan...

Whoa, you talked to Jim Biersach? And I thought I'd had a special opportunity by knowing Bruce Howze (of Community Professional Loudspeakers, Inc., designer of the Whelen sirens and drivers). What was he like? And how old is he?

I found the Centralia Hurricane 130 on Google Earth. The communications tower should be visible from the intersection of N Locust St. and E Noleman St, with another nearby landmark being a railway underpass. Just in case anybody else lives in the area and wants to take some better photos of the last...

Acoustically speaking, those horns are too small to provide pattern control, even at siren frequencies. The horns would need to expand to something about the size of an ACA Allertor's horn in order to control the wavefront. Otherwise, they're just changing how much of the high frequency harmonics ge...

The only language those governments understand is lawsuits. If you were outdoors where many people gather and there was no warning of a tornado in your area, that alone is enough reason to sue. You should be livid that your local government, which undertakes to use mass-notification systems to warn ...

I had the unfortunate experience of being in Lebanon and hearing the Sentry sirens activated for a tornado warning. This happened one weekend as I was leaving Purdue and heading to my home in Carmel for a weekend. The Sentry sirens sound a fundamental and then its first harmonic, which creates a sou...

Whelen Drivers

Two years ago, when I went to interview for an internship at Community Professional Loudspeakers, Inc. in Chester, PA (south of Philly), I was surprised to discover the company had a direct link with Whelen Engineering's line of electronic outdoor warning sirens, from the development of the fibergla...

The flashing green traffic signal in Ontario is called an "Advance Green". It means that traffic from your direction is getting a green light, while traffic from the opposite direction still has a red light. It's like their variation of a protected left turn, except that traffic proceeding...
